Ionia State Park Mt biking better than expected!!

Just finishing first part of Loop

It’s been two weeks since my last 14 hour adventure with my good buddy Nate….until today!!     The first adventure was to the north of Grand Rapids, and the second was to the south.     We decided to try something different and head east to the Ionia State Park, located 35 miles due east of Grand Rapids.   I’ve never been to the Ionia State Park but heard that it had some pretty good mountain biking trails , a huge lake and hiking trails.    It sounded perfect for our after work adventure.    On Monday we agreed on Tuesday as the day!

It was a busy day at work but we still tried to hit the road at five or just after.    It was 5:30 by the time we were out of office and on the road, a little late but we still had plenty of time.   We were pretty excited about finding our adventure at the Ionia State Park and read some pretty good reviews online about the park.

The Park is 4500 acres and includes something for everyone.   The website said it had a 10 mile loop of biking trails and by looking at the picture we thought we were going to be riding on a 6 foot wide path of packed gravel.   More of an easy cruise.    Once we checked into the park and onto the trail system we were pleasantly surprised.   The trail is called the Chief Cob-Moo-Sa Trail.    The trail is a single track that’s pretty technical and mostly wooded running along the Grand River  but occasionally changing out to some open spaces.   It has a lot of switchbacks, rocks, roots and some small hills and it’s a lot of fun.

Small Lake just off of Spur trail

We had to pay $20 for a campsite that’s more than the other parks we camped at but It did have a beautiful beach and the facilities were clean and modern.   We picked out a spacious site with some grassy area and an excellent view of Sessions Lake.  I would highly recommend checking this park out if  you’ve never been there before.

Cooling off after a hot ride!!

We rode the entire 10 mile loop and headed down to the lake just in time for an awesome swim before sunset.   We set up camp, made a fire, ate some food and hit the hay.   It was a perfect cool night and we slept well.   We were back at work by 7 a.m the next morning for an end to another awesome adventure.   What was your adventure??
